He led the NY Rangers to the Stanley Cup win in 1940 after leading the NHL in most games played, most shutouts, most playoff games by a goalie, most playoff minutes by a goalie, most playoff wins, most playoff shutouts and lowest playoff goals against average. He held the record for most playoff shutouts in a single playoff season (4) until tied by Mike Richter.As shown above, he was the first hockey player to appear on the cover of Time magazine (March 14th 1938).
In 1940 he won the Vezina trophy with a 1.54 GAA, 8 shutouts and a 19 game unbeaten streak. He finished the season with 27 wins and 11 losses and 10 ties with 8 shutouts. This was to be his next to last season, he retired after the 1940-41 season.
He was an ironman, missing only one game between 1934 and 1941 and started every game for 5 straight seasons (1936-1941).
