Today in NHL History (October 26th)

October 26th 1995 - Mario Lemieux (Pittsburgh Penguins) scored his 500th NHL career goal against the New York Islanders in his 605th game. 

He became the second-fastest player to reach 500. Wayne Gretzky had reached 600 goals by his 575th NHL game.

1995 Stanley Cup Final

The New Jersey Devils win their first Stanley Cup championship in their first time in the Final.   They met the Detroit Red Wings who had not been in the Final since 1957 and were the heavy favorites to dump the newcomer Devils.

Captain Scott Stevens and goaltender Martin Brodeur led the Devils to a shocking 4 game sweep of Detroit and celebrating the cup win at home.

Claude Lemieux won the Conn Smythe trophy as playoff MVP

Today in Hockey History October 26th

Today in 1995 Mario Lemieux joined the 500 goal club by getting goal number 500 against the New York Islanders.
Lemieux got his 500th in his 605th NHL game which is the 2nd fastest, behind only Wayne Gretzky who reached 500 in 575 games in 1986.
The 1995-1996 season would see Mario win his 3rd Hart trophy as league MVP and 4th of 5 Art Ross Trophies as the league top scorer with 69 goals and 92 assist.
