Team Spotlight

Today's Team Spotlight is on the AHL's San Antonio Rampage. The Rampage started in 2002 as the affiliate of the Phoenix Coyotes and are owned by the NBA's San Antonio Spurs.
The original name of the team was the Stampede but within a few weeks the name was changed to the current Rampage.

They play in the AT& T Center in San Antonio that seats 13,400 for a hockey game.

The Rampage finished the 2008-2009 last in the west division of the AHL' s Western Conference after making the playoffs the 2 previous seasons.
The head coach is Greg Ireland, who is in his 3rd season as the Rampage head coach after leaving the head coaching job at Grand Rapids.
They opened the 2009-2010 season with a 2-1 loss against the new Texas Stars.

Great Picture

This is a funny picture from Sports Illustrated in 1984, but what I want to know is where I can find one of those great looking jerseys?!

Theo Fleury cut from Calgary

Maybe he will catch on somewhere. Every team needs that playoff experience and veteran leadership he might bring.
Here is the story.

Wayne Gretzky resigns as coach of Phoenix Coyotes - NHL - SI.com

A little late on this one but it does not surprise me. Gretzky knew that a new owner would not be able to honor his 8 million dollar a year contract and he didnt want to move back to Canada to coach since he has live in AZ for several years now.

Hockeyville

The Islanders and Canucks opened the preseason with a trip to Terrace BC and Hockeyville. What a great idea and this will win fans over when they can see the great players this close and in a small setting.

It seems as though Dominik Hasek still has some game left. He made his debut with the Czech Republic team Extraliga along with ex-Cap Peter Sykora.

New twists as Coyotes future remains clouded - NHL - SI.com

Ok, in my own opinion the NHL is making this situation worse by acting oh so high and mighty and if the proposed owner would agree not to move the team until the 2010-2011 season he might get the team with very little objection. Overall this has been a huge fustercluck and is on the verge of giving the NHL a huge black eye. If the fans in Phoenix aren't discouraged enough this should put them completely off hockey.

SI NHL Preview Issue 10/11/1993

I am cataloguing (SP?) my Sports Illustrated Collection and I found the NHL Preview Issue for the 1993-94 season.
This is how the hockey genius' at Sports Illustrated picked the teams to finish in 1993-94 season
Eastern Conference
Atlantic Division
1-NY Islanders
2-Washington Capitals
3-NY Rangers
4-NJ Devils
5-Phil. FLyers
6-TB Lightning
7-Florida Panthers
Northeast Division
1-Quebec Nordiques
2-Pittsburgh Penguins
3-Mtl Canadiens
4-Boston Bruins
5-Buffalo Sabres
6-Hartford Whalers
7-Ottawa Senators

Western Conference
Central Division
1-Detroit
2- Toronto Maple Leafs
3-St Louis Blues
4-Chicago Blackhawks
5-Winnipeg Jets
6-Dallas Stars
Pacific Division
1-Vancouver Canucks
2-LA Kings
3-Calgary Flames
4-San Jose Sharks
5-Edmonton Oilers
6-Mighty Ducks of Anaheim

Eastern Conf Champs - Pittsburgh / Western Conf Champs - Detroit
Stanley Cup Finals - Pittsburgh over Detroit (they were only 15 years off)

We all know how this stinky season played out, with the Rangers winning the cup (at least they could shut up about not winning in 45 years) by beating the Canucks in 7 games.

Team Spotlight

Today's spotlight is on our own Indiana ICE!! The ICE play in the Pepsi Coliseum at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
Their regular season home USHL schedule kicks off Oct 30 against the Waterloo Blackhawks.
The begin the regular season with 5 straight road games but they are taking part in the USHL Fall Classic starting Friday Sept 11th thru Sept 22nd.

James Balsillie agrees to start season in Arizona - NHL - SI.com

It just amazes me that Betteman continues to say that Balsillie isnt honoring tradition and doesnt show respect for the the league and sport. Whatever! this is the league that trys to drive all the canadian teams out of existence because they want them all to be US based and down south for some reason. I think we are seeing the sunbelt teams arent succeeding like they want them too and the canadian teams and their fans arent going away. Betteman needs to go!
