Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins scores 5 goals 5 ways in an 8-6 defeat of the New Jersey Devils.  
He scored even strength, power play, penalty shot, short handed and empty net, he also added 3 assist for 8 points total in the game.

Today in NHL Hockey History (December 19th)


December 19th 1984 - Wayne Gretzky, 23, of the Edmonton Oilers, became only the 18th player in the National Hockey League (NHL) to score more than 1,000 points. He did it in his 424th career game. The previous record was held by Guy Lafleur who did it in 720 games.

On December 17, 1991 the Pittsburgh Penguins set a team record with eight goals in the second period of a 10-2 win over the San Jose Sharks.

Alexander Daigle

The Ottawa Senators first round draft pick at the 1993 NHL entry draft.  He was a relative unknown in the hockey world until drafted and is now considered one of the biggest bust in NHL draft history.  He managed to have only 3 NHL seasons with 50+ points (1993-94,1996-97 and 2003-04 with the Minnesota Wild).  He finished up his playing career in 2010 in the Swiss league.

December 5th 2002 - Michal Handzus (Philadelphia Flyers) became only the second NHL player to score an overtime goal on a penalty shot. The Flyers beat the New York Rangers 3-2.

Today in Hockey History (November 28th)


1982 - Ron Sutter began his NHL career as a Philadelphia Flyer. With his start a record was set when 5 brothers all played in the NHL. His brothers were Brian (St. Louis), Darryl (Chicago), Brent (Islanders) and Duane (Islanders). Ron's twin Rich signed with Pittsburgh a year later to make it six Sutters brothers in the league at one time.

Buffalo Sabres center Gilbert Perreault appears on the Feb. 26, 1973 cover of Sports Illustrated. The 1st overall pick of the 1970 NHL Draft, Perreault won the Calder Memorial Trophy (Rookie of the Year) for 1970-71 and played all of his 17 seasons with Buffalo. The six-time All-Star and Hall of Famer turned 65 years old today (Nov. 13). (Tony Triolo for SI)

Mr. Frank Selke (L) presents the Selke Trophy to Bob Gainey of the Montreal Canadiens.  This was the 4th consecutive Selke trophy for Gainey as he won first 4 ever presented.   
The Selke Trophy was introduced in 1978 for the NHL's best defensive forward.  Gainey won the award 4 times and that is the current mark for most wins of this trophy.
Frank Selke was the former general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens.

Ken Hitchcock 500th Win

February 19th 2009 - Ken Hitchcock becomes the 13th coach in NHL history to record 500 wins.

Win number 500 came as head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets as they defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs.


As of the start of the 2015-2016 NHL season, Hitchcock, now head coach of the St. Louis Blues, stands 4th on the list of victories (behind Scotty Bowman, Al Arbour and Joel Quenneville) with 708.
