AHL's Wolves sign 47-year-old Chelios to second pro tryout contract

Courtesy NHL.com

CHICAGO - Chris Chelios has earned more time with the Chicago Wolves.

The American Hockey League team signed the 47-year-old defenceman to a second professional tryout contract Sunday.

The 25-year NHL veteran has made 22 appearances since signing with the Wolves on Oct. 20, and the top defenceman on the team with 14 points (four goals, 10 assists).

Chelios is second on the Wolves with a plus-nine rating and has posted a plus or even rating in 17 of his 22 outings.

Chelios racked up 185 goals, 763 assists and 2,891 penalty minutes with the Montreal Canadiens (1983-90), Chicago Blackhawks (1990-99) and Detroit Red Wings (1999-2009).

The Chicago native won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenceman three times (1989, 1993, 1996), is an 11-time NHL all-star and has captured three Stanley Cups (Montreal in 1986, Detroit in 2002 and '08).

100 Years

Well I swallowed my hatred for the Montreal Canadiens long enough to watch Hockey Night in Canada tonight. They had all the living former Canadiens that were able to travel there and also retired 2 more jerseys, the #3 of Emile Bouchard and #16 of Elmer Lach. It was interesting to see Mr. Hockey Gordie Howe there enjoying the proceedings and then he was shown talking with Elmer Lach and you could tell those 2 had broken their noses a couple of times.
Its rare to see a ceremony honoring a teams 100 hundred years of existence and in one city, so I watched and the one thing that jumped out at me was the return to a Canadiens uniform of Patrick Roy. After the way he parted company in 1995 I wondered if he would attend any of the ceremonies for this seaons. Maybe because there is new ownership of the team or just because he wanted to be part of the celebration it was kind of cool seeing him taking shots in net with fellow Hall of Famer Ken Dryden.

He has hired John Gibson as head coach. Nice to see the GM losing his cool and getting suspended from coaching indefinately.

Twitter and Facebook

well if you want to follow your teams and you love keeping up to date then you must go to twitter and facebook. I follow sorts of teams and leagues of all kinds on twitter and I can also talk a little smack to friends on twitter and FB while watching games. Its always fun to see what other are saying about games and tv you are watching. Most hockey, baseball, basketball, auto racing leauges as well as off sports like rugby and soccer have twitter accounts. The NFL of course being the stodgy old league frowns on twitter for players and no tweeting during the games. Now the NFL has a twitter and the NFL network has one so you still get updates.
give it a try and see how much fun it can be.

Bankruptcy judge rejects both bids for Phoenix Coyotes

Well I guess the court decided that the NHL and the owners were an exclusive club that can only let in who they want, when they want and for how much.
So the league gets its wish to keep a team losing millions every season in a place that it will continue to lose millions instead of in a city where it would be a instant hit and probably turn a profit in a couple of season.

Team Spotlight

Today's Team Spotlight is on the AHL's San Antonio Rampage. The Rampage started in 2002 as the affiliate of the Phoenix Coyotes and are owned by the NBA's San Antonio Spurs.
The original name of the team was the Stampede but within a few weeks the name was changed to the current Rampage.

They play in the AT& T Center in San Antonio that seats 13,400 for a hockey game.

The Rampage finished the 2008-2009 last in the west division of the AHL' s Western Conference after making the playoffs the 2 previous seasons.
The head coach is Greg Ireland, who is in his 3rd season as the Rampage head coach after leaving the head coaching job at Grand Rapids.
They opened the 2009-2010 season with a 2-1 loss against the new Texas Stars.

A little late on this one but it does not surprise me. Gretzky knew that a new owner would not be able to honor his 8 million dollar a year contract and he didnt want to move back to Canada to coach since he has live in AZ for several years now.

New twists as Coyotes future remains clouded - NHL - SI.com

Ok, in my own opinion the NHL is making this situation worse by acting oh so high and mighty and if the proposed owner would agree not to move the team until the 2010-2011 season he might get the team with very little objection. Overall this has been a huge fustercluck and is on the verge of giving the NHL a huge black eye. If the fans in Phoenix aren't discouraged enough this should put them completely off hockey.

It just amazes me that Betteman continues to say that Balsillie isnt honoring tradition and doesnt show respect for the the league and sport. Whatever! this is the league that trys to drive all the canadian teams out of existence because they want them all to be US based and down south for some reason. I think we are seeing the sunbelt teams arent succeeding like they want them too and the canadian teams and their fans arent going away. Betteman needs to go!

NHL2K10 video game

I havent purchased any NHL video games in several years, but I may have to now that they have vintage jerseys and now according to this article (courtesy of Sean Leahy GFH) they have added "winter classic" mode to play at Ralph Wilson Stadium or Wrigley Field.
Also they now have the Hartford Whalers!

Realism. It's the main component that gamers desire in each game they play, specifically sports games. Gamers want detailed faces on players, authentic jerseys with special patches and stadiums that aren't the same template multiplied 30 times.
NHL 2K10, releasing on Sept. 15, is adding not one but two outdoor game modes this year's game. Players will have the choice of using either an outdoor pond setting or either or the venues used during the last two Winter Classics: Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo and Wrigley Field in Chicago.
That's not all: One of the many things desired by hockey gamers since both 2KSports and EA Sports began adding vintage jerseys into their games has been the inclusion of the
Hartford Whalers. Well, crank up the Brass Bonanza.
Check out another Winter Classic/outdoor hockey option:
According to 2K Sports, the Winter Classic modes will only be available when choosing an arena during a Quick Game and will not be included in a season or franchise mode. If players choose any of the four teams that have participated in the previous two outdoor games, the throwback jerseys will be selectable options along with the team's current set.
Meanwhile, remember the Whale?
The City of Hartford owns the copyright to the Whalers name and logo, which has been a roadblock for many merchandisers and video game companies in the past, but in NHL 2K10 gamers will have the chance to rock out to "
Brass Bonanza" and choose their favorite defunct NHL team's threads in game play.
2K Sports said that they were cleared by the National Hockey League to include the Whalers name and logo into the game, so hopefully that roadblock is gone forever for future hockey video games. The game will also feature plenty of other classic jerseys like the Winnipeg Jets, Quebec Nordiques and Minnesota North Stars among others.
The gameplay for NHL 2K10 has been revamped and expect to see stick lifts, stumble shots, better stick handling, new 1-on-1 moves and a new system of dekes
for cover boy Alexander Ovechkin(notes). Online play has been upgraded for 2K10 allowing gamers to take their created teams online and see how their unique players stack up against others.
If you're looking for playoff beards, NHL 2K10 will have them and some players will be able to grow full beards a la
Max Talbot(notes) while others will struggle with the ability to grow facial hair over the course of a playoff run.
Each arena in NHL 2K10 will have it's own different feel to it. You'll know if you're playing inside the United Center in Chicago or Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh. The lightning detail and remodeled look will give each arena its own unique atmosphere.
For those who own a Wii, 2KSports hasn't forgotten about you. Online play has been added for the first time and gamers will be able to take part in the exclusive Mii Superskills mode that lets you play in 5 different events while controlling your Mii.
All in all, while EA Sports' NHL series has been king for quite some time in the video hockey game market, 2K Sports has been making significant strides over the years. It looks as if NHL 2K10 is ready to make a serious challenge to the throne that EA has dominated.

Jim Balsillie sets Sept. 14 deadline for Coyotes deal - NHL - SI.com

Only the NHL would be so stupid to keep a team in a city where it is losing 30 million a year and assume that with the right management and improved product on ice it would start making money. The modern day NHL's bias towards Canada is so obvious in this case and its a shame.
It just boggles the mind that they have someone to buy it and move it to where it might actually make money next season and seasons after that, but they just want to try and tell everyone that hockey will work in the desert.
