1987 and 1988 Jack Adams Trophy

Jacque Demers is to date the first and only coach to win back to back Jack Adams Trophies as NHL Coach of the Year.  He won the 1987 and 1988 Awards as head coach of the Detroit Redwings.   In these 2 seasons he guided the Red Wings to consecutive Campbell Conference Finals appearances but lost both to eventual Stanley Cup champion Edmonton Oilers.

Today in Hockey History (April 3rd)

This day in 1988 the Pittsburgh Penguins Mario Lemeiux won his first of 6 Art Ross Trophies as the leading scorer in the NHL.

Mario would also win the trophy in 1989, 92,93,96 and 1997.

This was the first year that Wayne Gretzky did not win the trophy in the 1980s. Gretzky had won the trophy every year since the Edmonton Oilers joined the NHL in 1980.

Mario would also win the Hart Trophy as the NHL MVP for 1987-88 and it was the first year since 1979 (Bryan Trottier) that someone other than Wayne Gretzky would win the Hart Trophy.
