Hockey History
August 25th 1977
Alex Delvecchio and Tim Horton (yes that Tim Horton) were inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Tim Horton spent 24 seasons in the NHL (18 of them with the Toronto Maple Leafs, 2 as a Ranger, 2 with the Buffalo Sabres and 1 with the Penguins) as a punishing defenseman. He won 4 Stanley Cups with the Maple Leafs in 1962,1963,1964 and 1967. He would start the Tim Horton's Doughnuts in 1964 but tragically died at the age of 44 in a car accident on his way back to Buffalo after a game in Toronto.
Alex Delvecchio played 24 seasons also but all of them with the Detroit Red Wings and won 3 Stanley Cups in 1952, 1954 and 1955. He won 3 Lady Byng trophies as the NHL's Most Gentlemanly Player in 1959,1966 and 1969. He will be most remembered for his playing days as a member of the feared "Production Line" with Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay. He also coached the RedWings for 4 seasons (1973-1977) before resigning his position.
