Today in Hockey History

Well its for the a leap year February 29th 1980, Gordie  Howe set another all time  record by becoming  the  first professional to score 800 goals.  He did this with the Hartford Whalers which he had  joined in WHA as the New England Whalers in 1979 at the age of 51.  He retired after the 1979-80 season but had helped the Whalers gain publicity and brought attention to smaller markets that love hockey.

Today in Hockey History (1973)

May 6th 1973
The New England Whalers beat the Winnipeg Jets 9-6 in Hartford, Conn. to win the 1st WHA Hockey Championship Avco World Trophy.
New England won the Series 4 games to 1.

In the deciding game Larry Pleau scored a hat trick.  After winning the game, the Avco World Trophy had not yet been completed.  As a result of the this the Whalers skated their "victory lap" with their divisional trophy causing an embarrassment for the WHA officials.
