The New England Whalers beat the Winnipeg Jets 9-6 in Hartford, Conn. to win the 1st WHA Hockey Championship Avco World Trophy.
New England won the Series 4 games to 1.
In the deciding game Larry Pleau scored a hat trick. After winning the game, the Avco World Trophy had not yet been completed. As a result of the this the Whalers skated their "victory lap" with their divisional trophy causing an embarrassment for the WHA officials.
Buffalo Sabres center Gilbert Perreault appears on the Feb. 26, 1973 cover of Sports Illustrated. The 1st overall pick of the 1970 NHL Draft, Perreault won the Calder Memorial Trophy (Rookie of the Year) for 1970-71 and played all of his 17 seasons with Buffalo. The six-time All-Star and Hall of Famer turned 65 years old today (Nov. 13). (Tony Triolo for SI)
Phil Esposito would win the Art Ross Trophy as the league leader scorer in 1973-74 with 68 goals and 77 asssist for 145 points. He would also take home the Hart Trophy as the NHL's regular season MVP.
Bill Goldsworthy would finish the season with 48 goals and 26 assist for 74 points.
Today is the 62nd birthday of Philadelphia Flyers legend Bobby Clarke.
He retired from active on ice play after the 1983-84 season and at the time was 4th all time in assist and 11th in points scored, he has since moved down to 24th in assist and 42nd in points. His plus/minus rating is still 5th all time with +506.
He was the NHL MVP (Hart Trophy) in 1973,1975 and 1976 and he won the Frank Selke Trophy for best defensive forward in 1983.
He is biggest on ice triumph came in 1974 and 1975 as he led the Philadelphia Flyers to back to back Stanley Cup Championships.
He holds the Flyers record for most assist in a season with 89, which he did in 1974-75 and 1975-76 seasons.
Philadelphia retired his #16 in 1984 and named the trophy for the MVP of the Flyers, the Bobby Clarke Trophy.
In 1987 he was a first ballot inductee in to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
