Today in Hockey History (April 16th)

 


 April 16th 1992 - Brett Hull becomes the second player with three straight 70 goal seasons. Hull scores his 70th goal in a 5-3 victory over the Minnesota North Stars, joining Wayne Gretzky, who accomplished the feat twice.

Today in NHL History (March 24th)

March 24th 1992

Mario Lemieux (Pittsburgh Penguins) scored his 1000th career point in his 513th game. He was the second fastest player in the NHL to record 1000 points. 
Mario finished the season with 131 points and won the Art Ross Trophy.  He would lead the Penguins to their 2nd straight Stanley Cup championship and win the Conn Smythe trophy as the playoff MVP.

February 29th 1980
Gordie Howe (Hartford Whalers) became the first NHL player to score 800 goals. 
It was his 1,000th regular season game. 




February 29th 1992
 Ray Bourque scored his 1,000th career point. 
He was only the third NHL defenseman to score 1,000 career points.

October 17th 1992

Jari Kurri of the Los Angeles Kings scores his 500th goal in an 8-6 win over the Boston Bruins.
He was the 18th player in NHL history to reach the 500 goals mark.

Today in Hockey History (October 7th)


October 7th 1972
Eddie Westfall scores the New York Islanders first goal in their first game, a 3-2 loss to the expansion cousins the Atlanta Flames.
Westfall was also the first Islanders captain, and was the captain for the first 4 seasons of the Islanders existence.   He also led the team in assist (31) in the 1972-73 expansion season.



October 7th 1992
Chris Kontos scored four goals in the Tampa Bay Lightning's first game, a 7-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks.  It was also the first power play goal for the Tampa Bay and Kontos became the first Lightning play to record a hat-trick and four goal game.

The Buffalo Sabres aquired goaltender Dominik Hasek from the Chicago Blackhawks.  He would go on to win back to back Hart Trophies as NHL MVP in 1997 and 1998 along with 6 Vezina Trophies as the top NHL goaltender 
(1994,'95,'97,'98,'99 and 2001).

1992 NHL All Star Game



Philadelphia hosted the 43rd NHL All Star Game on January 18th 1992

The 43rd NHL All-Star Game featured 16 goals as the Campbell Conference defeated the Wales Conference, 10–6. Brett Hull was named as the All-Star M.V.P. by recording two goals and one assist, while playing on a line with Los Angeles KingsWayne Gretzky and Luc Robitaille.
